What are butterfly valves?
Butterfly valves are widely used to control, regulate, and isolate the flow of liquids and gases in industrial processes. They operate with a rotating disc mounted on a central shaft, which opens or closes to manage flow through the pipeline. Their compact design, fast operation, and low maintenance make them a practical choice in industries such as water treatment, HVAC, data centers, and food production.
How do butterfly valves work?
The operating principle of a butterfly valve is straightforward. A disc is positioned in the center of the pipeline and connected to a shaft. When the shaft rotates a quarter turn, the disc moves from a fully open to a fully closed position. In the open position, the disc is aligned with the direction of flow, allowing media to pass through with minimal resistance. In the closed position, the disc is perpendicular to the flow, creating a seal against the valve seat. This simple mechanism enables fast and reliable operation, making butterfly valves particularly effective in systems that require frequent switching or precise flow regulation.
The sealing is achieved through the contact between the disc edge and the seat material. Depending on the design and seat material, butterfly valves can provide tight shutoff for a wide range of media, from clean water to aggressive chemicals and high-temperature steam.
Types of butterfly valves
Butterfly valves are available in different designs, each suited to specific operating conditions. Wafer butterfly valves are the most compact and cost-effective option, designed to fit between two flanges in a pipeline. They are widely used in standard applications such as water treatment and HVAC. Double flange butterfly valves offer a more robust connection and are preferred in systems where a secure, permanent installation is required.
Eccentric butterfly valve designs, such as double-offset and triple-offset models, are developed for more demanding conditions. The offset geometry reduces friction between the disc and seat during operation, which limits wear and extends service life. These designs are particularly suited for applications involving high pressure, elevated temperatures, or aggressive media.
Resilient seated butterfly valves use an elastomer seat, typically made from EPDM, BUNA-N, or PTFE, to achieve a bubble-tight seal. They are cost-effective and well suited for low to medium pressure applications in water, HVAC, and general process industries. Metal seated butterfly valves, by contrast, use a metal-to-metal sealing system and are designed for severe service conditions where elastomers would degrade. They are commonly found in high-temperature steam systems, refinery applications, and critical isolation duties.
Seat and disc materials
Material selection plays an important role in the performance and service life of a butterfly valve. The disc and seat must be compatible with the media, temperature, and pressure of the application. Common disc materials include cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, and exotic alloys such as Hastelloy and Monel for highly corrosive environments. Seat materials range from EPDM and BUNA-N for general water and HVAC applications to FKM for chemical resistance and PTFE for near-universal chemical compatibility. Selecting the correct combination ensures reliable sealing performance and minimizes the risk of premature failure.
Advantages of butterfly valves
These valves offer several advantages compared to other valve types. Their lightweight construction and simple design make them easy to install, even in large-diameter pipelines. They provide efficient flow control with a low pressure drop, quick quarter-turn operation, and reliable sealing. In addition, their limited maintenance needs and cost efficiency make them suitable for both standard and demanding applications. With the right seat and disc materials, they can handle a wide range of temperatures, pressures, and corrosive media.
Compared to gate valves or ball valves of equivalent size, butterfly valves are significantly lighter and more compact. This reduces installation costs, simplifies pipe support requirements, and makes them easier to handle in the field. Their low torque requirements also mean that smaller, more cost-effective actuators can often be used.

Applications of Bray Controls butterfly valves
These valves are applied across various industries, including:
In each of these sectors, the specific valve design, materials, and actuation method are selected based on the process conditions and regulatory requirements. Bray's engineering team supports customers in identifying the right configuration for each application, from initial specification through to installation and commissioning.
Certifications of Bray Controls
Bray focuses on quality, safety, and performance. All valves comply with international standards such as ISO 9001, API 607, and ISO 10497, and meet PED 2014/68/EU requirements. Designs follow ISO 5752 and ISO 5211, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of actuators and mounting systems. Fire-safe certifications are available for relevant models, which is particularly important in oil and gas and petrochemical applications where valve integrity under fire conditions is a safety requirement.
Modular design and automation compatibility
The modular design allows easy adaptation to specific requirements. Valves can be equipped with manual, pneumatic, or electric actuators and integrate smoothly with Bray control systems. This approach simplifies maintenance and improves overall system efficiency.
Automation of butterfly valves is common in modern industrial installations where remote operation, process feedback, or integration with a distributed control system is required. Bray's range of actuators and positioners is designed to mount directly onto the valve without the need for additional brackets or adapters, reducing installation time and improving overall system reliability.
